I don't know which distribution you use, but it's available for Debian: http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/libpanel-applet2-dev
I know that many things changed for gnome3 including the way applets are handled, but as far as I know older applets still work. You should be able to install both 2.0 and 4.0 alongside eachother. This is for example the case with GTK 1.x and GTK 2.x, but again I haven't yet tested this in gnome3.

I'll test this both in gnome3 and KDE and see if there are any issues.

There are some library issues with my version of Gnome. Although managed to load libgnomeui-2.0, libpanelapplet-2.0 is replaced with libpanelapplet-4.0. This gets me to the compile
stage but then I run into changes between V2 and V4 starting with:

equake_func.h:51:3: error: unknown type name ‘PanelAppletBackgroundType’
equake_func.h:174:3: error: unknown type name ‘BonoboUIComponent’

I need a bit more time to see what changes are required. I could try to find a copy of libpanelapplet-2.0 but I may then run into other compatibility issues.

I will try and put some more time in later this week.

I haven't tried to run it under KDE, however if GNOME applets should run under KDE then the Equake applet should run also. Since I made a conscious effort to code it according to the GNOME standards. As long as you have the right developer packages for the relevant gnome libraries it should compile at least. I do not know how KDE renders GNOME applets, whether it displays them in its own panel or renders them in some kind of X window. But as I said, if you have other applets that run under KDE this one should also.

Let me know if you have any success. I should try it myself too actually.

I'm working on a solution, expect an update soon.

I couldn't yet reproduce the background issue. But I suspect it has something to do with saving preferences. The app reads the preferences from an xml file after each update (they can get "lost" otherwise). It looks like in your case they either aren't saved properly or get reset. I believe the former. I don't know why though, lack of space or no write permissions?

Yes I agree the USGS source is the best one. I was thinking of adding alternative sources in addition to this one, however that is more work so it'll be something for the long term.

Thanks so much Jeroen! What a quick and complete response - much appreciated!

I have an LG P970 (aka Optimus Black) running Android 2.2.2

I cannot prove it but it seems that the background transparency disappears when the overlying data changes - yet when I go back in - choosing the background still shows as "Yes". Turning it off and then back to "Yes" puts the background back on.

Your explanation of why the tool appears to be US Centric was excellent. I think your proposed quick solution of providing the ability to up the threshold of Magnitude will address the problem, while still giving the ability of retaining USGS as the source. Is it not the "best" and most timely?

Thanks again!

Hello David, thank you for your suggestions and for purchasing the app.

Regarding the problems you found:

"1. The semi-transparent background available is a fantastic idea – and critical for me. However it always disappears within a few minutes,"

I am sorry, that is unfortunate. I haven't noticed this myself which makes it hard to trouble shoot. Could you let me know the exact Android device and the version of the OS you are using? In that case it will be easier for me to reproduce the problem.

"2. So far it seems that 90% of the earthquakes shown are on the US. Is the tool US-centric? Can this be changed or made an option?"

I get the data from the USGS site and they have updates every 5 minutes for North America and updates every 30 minutes for the rest of the world. That means it is more US centric. However I am looking into changing this or giving the user the ability to choose a different source.

A first step would be to allow the user to choose to monitor a higher magnitude. Say you choose magnitude 3, in that case you would only see earthquakes of magnitude 3 and up. This will filter out a lot of the US centric earthquakes because many of those are below magnitude 3.

This would be an easy fix so expect an update soon. The other one (choosing a different source) will take a bit more time to implement.

Have purchased and installed the E-Quake app, Exactly the type of app I want - Thanks!
However two issues which hopefully will be addressed.
1. The semi-transparent background available is a fantastic idea - and critical for me. However it always disappears within a few minutes, leaving if I can see it, the print. Can this be fixed so that the background (if chosen) stays?
2. So far it seems that 90% of the earthquakes shown are on the US. Is the tool US-centric? Can this be changed or made an option??
Thanks again.
